Hoya gigas
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Hoya gigas is native to Borneo's lowland rainforests and is renowned for its extraordinary inflorescences, which can exceed 20 cm in diameter. This vigorous epiphytic climber produces thick, cordate leaves and grows rapidly in humid conditions, making it a centrepiece among tropical collections.
Distinctive Features
- Imposing umbels: The flower clusters are impressively large, often bearing dozens of waxy blooms in rich burgundy to reddish-pink shades with lighter centres.
- Fragrance and nectar: Flowers exude a sweet scent and produce copious nectar, attracting pollinators in their native habitat.
- Robust climber: Exhibits a strong, twining growth habit and requires support as it matures.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch leaves.
- Water: Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings; reduce in cooler months.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity and benefits from misting or a nearby humidifier.
- Media: Use a chunky, well-aerated epiphytic mix containing bark, perlite, and a touch of coco coir.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–28 °C; protect from temperatures below 10 °C.
- Fertiliser: Feed fortnightly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser; reduce in autumn.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the pot; choose a slightly larger container with excellent drainage.
