Hoya guppyi hails from the rainforests of Borneo, where it grows epiphytically among the humid understory. This species is celebrated for its thick, rugged leaves and richly pigmented flowers, making it a highly sought-after specimen for collectors.
Distinctive Features
- Leaf Texture: The leaves are broad, dark green, and heavily veined, with a crumpled, almost bullate surface that may blush under strong light.
- Flowers: Umbels of deep maroon to dark purple, fuzzy blooms with pale centres form a striking contrast against the foliage. Slightly scented.
- Growth Form: A climbing or trailing epiphyte, it does best when allowed to twine or cascade, benefiting from airy support structures.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, filtered light is ideal. Morning sun is beneficial, but prolonged direct sun may scorch the foliage.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top third of the substrate is dry; reduce in cooler months.
- Humidity: Appreciates high humidity (60–80%), especially during active growth and blooming periods.
- Media: Use a loose, airy mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco fibre for strong root development.
- Temperature: Optimal growth occurs between 18–28°C; avoid temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced, dilute fertiliser formulated for epiphytes.
- Repotting: Best repotted every 2–3 years or when visibly root-bound, preferably in spring.
Additional Notes
- Flowering is enhanced when the plant is lightly root-bound and exposed to consistent warmth and humidity.
- Foliage appearance improves with age, and strong light can induce attractive reddish pigmentation.
