Unique Shield-Leaved Shingler
Hoya imbricata is native to the humid lowland forests of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines and Indonesia. It is revered for its extraordinary growth pattern, with large, circular leaves that press tightly against tree trunks, mimicking the appearance of natural shingles. This species has evolved to form a symbiotic relationship with ants, which often inhabit the hollow undersides of its leaves.
Distinctive Features
- Shingling habit: Produces broad, domed leaves that adhere flat to vertical surfaces such as bark or moss poles.
- Floral traits: Bears clusters of small, pale green to purple-brown flowers with a waxy texture and a subtle earthy fragrance.
- Growth form: A true epiphyte with trailing to climbing stems, relying on host surfaces rather than soil.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light. Avoid direct afternoon sun which may scorch foliage.
- Water: Water moderately during active growth; reduce in cooler months but never allow to dry completely.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments (above 60%), making it ideal for terrariums or greenhouses.
- Media: Mount on bark, cork, or tree fern with sphagnum moss; ensure excellent airflow and drainage.
- Temperature: Optimum range is 18–28 °C; protect from chills below 12 °C.
- Fertiliser: Feed fortnightly in spring/summer with a diluted epiphyte or orchid fertiliser.
- Repotting: Rarely required if mounted; remount when moss deteriorates or roots outgrow support.
Additional Notes
- This species is particularly attractive to ant colonies, which may assist with pest protection and nutrient exchange.
- Encouraging climbing behaviour on a vertical surface enhances leaf size and presentation.
