Hoya imbricata
The Unique Shingle Plant
Hoya imbricata, also known as the Shingle Plant, is a truly remarkable Hoya species that has evolved a fascinating growth habit. This intriguing Hoya is native to Southeast Asia and is a prized addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Round, overlapping leaves that resemble shingles on a roof. The leaves are typically green with a slightly fuzzy texture and can develop reddish hues under brighter light conditions.
- Flowers: Umbel-shaped clusters of small, fuzzy, white or pale pink flowers with a sweet fragrance.
- Growth Habit: Vining epiphyte that naturally grows on trees. It thrives when allowed to climb a support, such as a trellis or moss pole.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Hoya imbricata is generally easy to care for once you understand its basic needs.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
- This Hoya can be propagated through stem cuttings.
