Hoya imperialis
A Regal Hoya with Majestic Blooms
Prepare to be enchanted by the captivating presence of Hoya imperialis, a truly magnificent Hoya species renowned for its large, fragrant flowers and vigorous growth. Native to Malaysia and the Philippines, this remarkable climber is a prized addition to any plant collection and a testament to the beauty of the natural world.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Large, leathery leaves, reaching up to 20cm (8 inches) in length, with a deep green hue and prominent veins. The leaves are oval-shaped with a pointed tip and have a slightly succulent texture.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of exquisite, star-shaped flowers that can measure up to 8cm (3 inches) in diameter. The flowers have a velvety texture, a captivating deep red to purple colouration, and emit a delightful fragrance, especially in the evenings.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya is a vigorous vining plant that can reach several metres (10+ feet) in length. It thrives when provided with a sturdy support to climb, such as a trellis or moss pole. It can also be grown in a hanging basket, where its cascading vines create a dramatic display.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential for optimal growth and flowering. While it appreciates some direct morning or evening sun, protect it from harsh midday rays that can scorch its leaves.
- Water: Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring the entire root ball is moistened, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering frequency.
- Humidity: As a tropical plant, Hoya imperialis thrives in moderate to high humidity. Elevate humidity levels by misting the leaves regularly, grouping plants together, or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.
- Temperature: Maintain a warm environment with temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F). Protect the plant from cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.
- Fertiliser: Feed your Hoya imperialis with a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or cease fertilisation during the winter months.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes and use a well-draining potting mix suitable for epiphytic plants.
Additional Notes
- Hoya imperialis is generally easy to care for, rewarding your efforts with its stunning blooms and lush foliage.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
- This Hoya can be propagated through stem cuttings, allowing you to share its beauty with others.
