Hoya juannguoiana is an uncommon species native to the lowland forests of Borneo, thriving in warm, humid environments. It is admired for its elegant foliage and delicately coloured flowers with a striking pink corona.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Broad, slightly cupped leaves with a glossy green surface and subtle veining along the midrib.
- Flowers: Pale pink to cream corolla with a deeper pink corona, forming neat umbels that are mildly fragrant in warm conditions.
- Growth Habit: A scandent, vining epiphyte that climbs or trails readily, producing aerial roots for support.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light but tolerates light shade; avoid harsh direct sun to prevent foliage damage.
- Water: Allow the top few centimetres of the potting mix to dry between waterings; reduce frequency in cooler months.
- Humidity: Benefits from moderate to high humidity, ideally above 60% for best growth and flowering.
- Media: A loose, free-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat is recommended.
- Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures between 18–28°C; protect from chills below 12°C.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during active growth; reduce during dormancy.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when roots become congested; best done in early spring.
Additional Notes
- Flowering tends to increase with plant maturity and stable, warm conditions. Avoid cutting peduncles, as flowers reappear on them.
- As with many Hoyas, it may take time to establish but rewards patience with vigorous vining and striking floral displays.
