Hoya kanyakumariana
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Hoya kanyakumariana is native to the humid tropical forests of southern India, particularly in the Kanyakumari district from which it takes its name. This diminutive epiphyte is admired for its soft, hairy leaves and elegant clusters of star-shaped white flowers with pinkish-red centres. Its natural habitat suggests a preference for warm, shaded environments with steady humidity.
Distinctive Features
- Velvety Foliage: The oval-shaped leaves are covered in fine hairs, giving the plant a distinctively soft texture and matte appearance.
- Charming Inflorescence: Produces umbels of dainty, five-pointed blooms, typically white with a contrasting reddish crown; lightly fragrant.
- Petite Growth Habit: Naturally compact and slow-growing, this species often trails or forms small clumps in cultivation.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun; avoid harsh afternoon exposure.
- Water: Allow to dry slightly between watering; reduce watering frequency in cooler months.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity, particularly in warm conditions; benefits from misting or proximity to a humidity tray.
- Media: Best grown in a well-draining epiphytic mix – consider orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir blend.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–28 °C; protect from temperatures below 10 °C.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted balanced fertiliser monthly during the active growth period (spring to early autumn).
- Repotting: Infrequently needed; repot every 2–3 years or when roots fill the pot.
