Hoya kanyakumariana
A Rare Gem from the Western Ghats
Hoya kanyakumariana, a captivating climber hailing from the Western Ghats of India, is a true botanical treasure. This rare Hoya species is a must-have for any plant enthusiast seeking to add a touch of exotic allure to their collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Exquisite, ovate leaves with a deep green hue and a velvety texture. The leaves are adorned with prominent veins, adding to their visual appeal. They measure approximately 6-10 centimetres (2.4-3.9 inches) in length and 4-6 centimetres (1.6-2.4 inches) in width.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers in a pristine white shade. The flowers have a delightful fragrance and measure about 1 centimetre (0.4 inches) in diameter.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya exhibits a graceful vining growth habit. Its slender vines can reach lengths of up to 2 metres (6.6 feet) or more, making it an excellent choice for trellises, hanging baskets, or allowing it to cascade down shelves.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential for optimal growth and flowering. A few hours of gentle morning or evening sun can enhance its vitality. However, it is crucial to protect it from harsh midday sun, which can scorch its delicate leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. This Hoya prefers a well-draining potting mix that prevents excessive moisture retention, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: As a native of the humid Western Ghats, this Hoya thrives in environments with moderate to high humidity. Consider using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting its leaves regularly to maintain optimal humidity levels.
- Temperature: Maintain a warm temperature range between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
- Fertiliser: Feed your Hoya kanyakumariana with a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or cease fertilisation during the dormant period (autumn and winter).
- Repotting: Repotting is typically necessary every 1-2 years as the plant outgrows its container. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage and use a well-draining potting mix suitable for epiphytic plants.
Additional Notes
- Hoya kanyakumariana is a relatively low-maintenance plant, making it suitable for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.
- Pruning can help maintain its desired shape and encourage bushier growth.
- This Hoya can be propagated through stem cuttings, allowing you to expand your collection or share its beauty with others.
