Hoya lambii
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Hoya lambii is a species from the Philippines, known for its exceptionally large, leathery leaves that can reach up to 25 cm in length. The foliage is broadly oval with a thick texture and a deep green surface, often with visible venation that adds to its bold appearance. When mature, the plant produces umbels of creamy white flowers with a faint fragrance, each bloom displaying the typical star-shaped structure of the genus. It grows naturally in humid, shaded forest habitats and under cultivation requires warmth, filtered light, and free-draining media to thrive.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: The most striking feature of Hoya lambii is its pitcher-shaped leaves, which serve as tiny homes for ants. These leaves are typically 5-10cm (2-4 inches) long and have a waxy texture. The colour can range from light green to reddish-green depending on the light levels.
- Flowers: Hoya lambii produces clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers that are typically white or pale pink with a sweet fragrance. The flowers often have a fuzzy appearance due to the presence of fine hairs.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a vining growth habit and thrives when provided with a support to climb, such as a trellis or moss pole. It can also be grown in a hanging basket where its unique leaves can be admired.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Hoya lambii is generally easy to care for once you understand its basic needs.
- The pitcher-shaped leaves of this Hoya are fascinating to observe. You may even spot ants taking up residence in them!
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
