- Flowers: Produces clusters of truly magnificent, reflexed flowers in a captivating deep crimson colour. These remarkable blooms can reach up to 7.5cm (3 inches) in diameter, making them some of the largest in the Hoya genus. The flowers have a velvety texture and a subtle fragrance.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a vigorous vining growth habit with thick, sturdy vines that can reach several metres (feet) in length. It thrives when provided with a robust support to climb or can be grown in a hanging basket where its vines can cascade gracefully.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential. Some direct morning or evening sun can encourage flowering, but avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top layer of the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: While this Hoya can tolerate average household humidity, it thrives in environments with moderate to high humidity. Consider using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or misting the leaves regularly to increase humidity.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons. Reduce or cease fertilisation during the autumn and winter months when growth naturally slows.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one and use a well-draining potting mix suitable for epiphytic plants.
