Hoya lithophytica - Rare Slow-Growing Hoya (Not WA)
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Hoya lithophytica is a unique species of Hoya native to Malaysia, where it grows as a lithophyte, meaning it naturally thrives on rocky surfaces rather than trees. This adaptation sets it apart from many other Hoya species. It features thick, succulent-like leaves with a leathery texture, helping it retain moisture in its natural habitat. The plant produces clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers that range in colour from pale pink to creamy white, often accompanied by a mild fragrance.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, elliptic to lanceolate, and dark green, with a smooth, slightly succulent texture. The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stem and can grow up to 4cm (1.6in) long and 2cm (0.8in) wide.
- Flowers: Borne in clusters of up to 15, each with a diameter of 1cm (0.4in). The flowers are a delicate pale yellow colour with a darker yellow centre and have a subtle, sweet fragrance.
- Growth Habit: A compact vining plant that typically grows up to 1.5m (5ft) long. It is best grown in a hanging basket or on a small trellis to allow its unique foliage to take centre stage.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Misting the leaves regularly can help to increase humidity levels.
- Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 18-25°C (64-77°F). Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Fertilise once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
- Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal. Adding a small amount of lime to the potting mix can be beneficial.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer and root them in a well-draining potting mix.
