Hoya macgillivrayi is a robust and fast-growing epiphytic climber native to the Cape York Peninsula of northern Queensland. It is admired for its glossy foliage and large, richly coloured blooms that add dramatic flair to any hoya collection.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Broad, leathery leaves with a deep green sheen that mature to a firm, glossy finish.
- Flowers: Produces large umbels of deep crimson to burgundy flowers with a darker central corona; strongly fragrant, particularly in the evening.
- Growth Habit: Vigorous twining climber with semi-woody stems that can reach several metres in length when supported.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright filtered light or dappled shade; avoid direct midday sun which may scorch the foliage.
- Water: Keep evenly moist during the active growing season; reduce watering in cooler months but do not allow to fully dry out.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity; misting or proximity to other plants can assist in drier interiors.
- Media: Use a well-draining epiphytic mix – ideally one containing orchid bark, perlite, and chunky coco peat.
- Temperature: Thrives between 18–28 °C and should be protected from temperatures below 10 °C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser fortnightly in spring and summer to encourage healthy flowering.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when root-bound; choose a pot that allows for slight snugness to support flowering.
Additional Notes
- Flowering is often triggered by warm temperatures and increased light, with blooms appearing in late spring through summer.
- This species is particularly attractive to pollinators and benefits from good air circulation around the vines.
