Prepare to be enchanted by the exquisite Hoya macgillivrayii, a truly majestic Hoya species that reigns supreme with its breathtakingly large flowers and captivating fragrance. Native to Australia, this climber is a prized jewel in the world of Hoyas.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Large, ovate leaves with a deep green hue and a glossy finish. The leaves can reach up to 20cm (7.9 inches) in length and have prominent veins that add to their elegance.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of exceptionally large, cup-shaped flowers that can measure up to 8cm (3.1 inches) in diameter. The flowers have a velvety texture and come in a range of stunning colours, from deep reds and purples to soft pinks. Their fragrance is equally captivating, with a sweet, heady aroma that fills the air.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya is a vigorous vining plant that thrives with a sturdy support to climb, such as a trellis or moss pole. It can also be grown in a hanging basket where its cascading vines create a dramatic display.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential for optimal growth and flowering. While it appreciates some direct sunlight, protect it from harsh midday rays that can scorch its leaves.
- Water: Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. This Hoya prefers a well-draining potting mix and dislikes sitting in soggy conditions.
- Humidity: As a tropical plant, it thrives in moderate to high humidity. You can elevate humidity levels by misting the leaves regularly, grouping it with other plants, or using a humidifier.
- Temperature: Maintain a warm environment with temperatures between 18-29°C (64-84°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Feed your Hoya macgillivrayii with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one and use a well-draining potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Hoya macgillivrayii is a relatively fast-growing Hoya that can reward you with abundant blooms under the right conditions.
- Be patient when it comes to flowering. It may take a few years for a young plant to mature and produce its first blooms.
- Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and other problems.
- With its captivating beauty and intoxicating fragrance, Hoya macgillivrayii is truly a queen among Hoyas. Its graceful presence will undoubtedly elevate any plant collection.
