Hoya macrophylla is a robust, vining epiphyte native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Admired for its large, leathery leaves and potential for stunning variegation, this species is a collector’s favourite and thrives in protected indoor spaces or warm, humid gardens.
Distinctive Features
- Textured Leaves: Thick, rigid leaves with prominent veins and occasional cream or pink variegation along the margins.
- Fragrant Flowers: Clusters of small, star-shaped white to pale pink flowers emerge seasonally and emit a pleasant scent.
- Trailing Habit: Naturally climbs or cascades, making it ideal for hanging baskets or trellised support.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct midday sun which can scorch the foliage.
- Water: Allow the substrate to dry partially between waterings; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity levels, especially when grown indoors.
- Media: Best grown in a loose, airy mix – such as orchid bark and perlite – to mimic epiphytic conditions.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18–28°C; protect from cold drafts and frost.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound; prefers slightly tight conditions in the pot.
Additional Notes
- This species may take several years to flower but rewards patience with fragrant umbels when mature.
- New foliage often emerges with a reddish or pink tinge, particularly in bright light.
