Hoya manipurensis – Glossy-Foliaged Wax Plant
Hoya manipurensis is a rare epiphyte endemic to the forested highlands of Manipur in Northeast India. With its slender, glossy foliage and umbels of pale star-like flowers, this species adds a refined aesthetic to any collection. Though less flamboyant than some relatives, it offers quiet charm and dependable growth in the right environment.
Distinctive Features
- Glossy Leaves: Narrow, lance-shaped foliage with a smooth surface and fine venation.
- Fragrant Flowers: Clusters of creamy-white blooms with a faint, sweet perfume, appearing during warmer months.
- Trailing Habit: Naturally climbs or cascades, ideal for trellises, hanging pots or mounted displays.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates some dappled sun but avoid direct midday rays.
- Water: Allow the top few centimetres of the medium to dry between watering; reduce in cooler months.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity; thrives above 60% if possible.
- Media: Free-draining epiphytic mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and chunky coco coir.
- Temperature: Prefers 16–28°C; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced, diluted fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound; avoid overpotting.
Additional Notes
- This species is not commonly found in cultivation, making it a prized addition for Hoya enthusiasts.
- Non-toxic to pets, though best kept out of reach due to trailing habit.
With its graceful foliage and softly scented blossoms, Hoya manipurensis rewards patient care with subtle beauty. It makes an excellent choice for growers who appreciate the quiet charm of more understated species within the genus.
