Hoya minahassae is a truly captivating species that hails from the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. This rare Hoya is prized for its distinctive foliage and unique flower clusters, making it a sought-after addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Large, ovate leaves with a deep green colour and prominent veins. The leaves have a slightly succulent texture and a velvety surface. They can grow up to 15cm (6 inches) long and 8cm (3 inches) wide.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, fuzzy, yellow flowers with a reddish-brown centre. The flowers have a delightful fragrance and a unique, almost spidery appearance.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a vining growth habit and can climb to several metres (feet) in length. It thrives when provided with a support to climb, such as a trellis or moss pole. It can also be grown in a hanging basket.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Some direct morning or evening sun can be tolerated.
- Water: Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix.
