Hoya mirabilis 'Big Leaf'
release_alert Low Stock - 2 available
Hoya mirabilis 'Big Leaf' is a form selected for its unusually large foliage, giving it a more substantial presence than is typical of the species. Hoya mirabilis occurs in Thailand and neighbouring regions, where it grows in warm, humid forests attached to surrounding vegetation. Under cultivation, the long stems can be trained to supports or left to trail from a container.
The leaves are broad, oval to slightly elongated, deep green in colour, and have distinct venation that becomes more visible with age. Their larger size sets this form apart from others in the species. When mature, the plant produces umbels of pale greenish-yellow flowers with darker centres. The blooms are lightly fragrant and often carry droplets of nectar at their surface.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Oversized elliptical leaves with prominent veining and a soft, matte surface.
- Blooms: Clusters of pale yellow to greenish-white star-shaped flowers that open at night and emit a sweet perfume.
- Growth Habit: Vining epiphyte with a climbing or trailing habit when given support.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates light morning sun.
- Water: Water regularly in the warmer months, allowing the top layer of substrate to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels but adapts to average indoor conditions.
- Media: Best grown in a coarse, well-draining epiphytic mix with bark, perlite, and coco coir.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–28 °C; avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 10 °C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound, preferably in spring.
