Hoya pubicalyx hails from the humid forests of the Philippines, where it grows as an epiphyte in warm, shaded environments. Admired for its vigorous habit and resilient nature, it is a favourite among collectors for both its foliage and long-lasting floral displays.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Elongated, dark green leaves often scattered with silver or grey speckles; new growth may flush maroon in bright conditions.
- Flowers: Umbels of small, star-like flowers ranging from pale pink to deep red, with a light, pleasant fragrance.
- Growth Habit: Fast-growing vine that twines and trails readily; ideal for trellises, hanging baskets, or totems.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light; tolerates some morning or filtered sun. Dim light may reduce flowering.
- Water: Let potting medium dry out partially between waterings. Avoid waterlogging and reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; misting or pebble trays can help in dry environments.
- Media: Use a well-draining mix such as orchid bark blended with perlite and coco coir for airy root conditions.
- Temperature: Grows well between 18–30 °C; protect from frost and sudden cold snaps.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in the growing season with a balanced or bloom-boosting fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the pot; prefers snug containers for best flowering.
Additional Notes
- Produces flowers on persistent peduncles; avoid removing old stalks as they rebloom annually.
- This species is known for its variability, with numerous cultivated forms offering differing foliage and flower colours.
