Hoya pubicalyx 'Pink Dragon' originates from the Philippines and is noted for its fast-growing, twining stems and clusters of bright pink, star-shaped flowers. A member of the Apocynaceae family, it thrives as a tropical epiphyte and is prized for its durability and striking appearance.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Long, lanceolate leaves often marked with silver flecks; some forms develop a reddish blush in strong light.
- Flowers: Densely packed umbels of deep pink to magenta blooms with a mild fragrance, typically appearing in spring through late summer.
- Growth Habit: Rapidly climbing or trailing; suitable for hanging baskets or trained along supports.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates some direct morning sun; low light reduces flowering.
- Water: Allow substrate to dry partially between waterings; reduce frequency in cooler months.
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity, though adapts well to indoor conditions.
- Media: Use a chunky, free-draining epiphytic mix with orchid bark, perlite, and coconut husk.
- Temperature: Ideal between 18–28 °C; protect from frost and cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the active growth period (spring to early autumn).
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound; prefers to be slightly pot-bound for optimal flowering.
Additional Notes
- Older plants may produce flowers on the same peduncles each season; do not remove spent stalks.
- May exhibit a reddish tint under high light – this is not stress, but a natural pigment response.
