Hoya rubida - Compact, Colourful, and Collectible
Hoya rubida
A Compact Beauty with a Colourful Character
Prepare to be enchanted by the delightful *Hoya rubida*, a species hailing from the Philippines that's sure to capture the hearts of Hoya enthusiasts. This compact climber is an absolute gem, boasting a vibrant display of colours and textures that will elevate any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, ovate to lanceolate leaves, typically 3-6cm (1.2-2.4 inches) long and 2-3cm (0.8-1.2 inches) wide. The leaves emerge with a captivating bronze hue, gradually maturing to a deep green, often adorned with splashes of burgundy or silver. This natural variegation adds a touch of whimsy and ensures that no two leaves are quite the same.
- Flowers: Delicate, star-shaped flowers, approximately 1cm (0.4 inches) in diameter, bloom in clusters, creating a charming spectacle. The petals are typically a soft pink or salmon hue, complemented by a contrasting deep red corona. These fragrant blooms add a delightful sensory experience to your indoor garden.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a compact, vining growth habit, making it an ideal choice for smaller spaces or for those who prefer a more manageable climber. It can be trained to climb a small trellis or support, or allowed to cascade gracefully from a hanging basket.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential for optimal growth and colour development. A few hours of gentle morning or evening sun can enhance the vibrancy of the foliage, but avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. This Hoya is susceptible to root rot if kept overly moist, so err on the side of caution. A well-draining potting mix is crucial to prevent waterlogging.
- Humidity: As a tropical epiphyte, *Hoya rubida* appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can create a more humid environment by misting the leaves regularly, grouping plants together, or using a humidifier. A pebble tray filled with water can also help to increase humidity around the plant.
- Temperature: Maintain a comfortable temperature range between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F), as this can stress the plant and hinder its development.
- Fertiliser: Feed your *Hoya rubida* with a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Dilute the fertiliser to half strength to avoid over-fertilisation, which can damage the roots.
- Repotting: Repotting is typically necessary every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one, and use a well-draining potting mix that is suitable for epiphytes. Spring is the ideal time to repot, as the plant is actively growing and can recover more quickly from any stress.
Additional Notes
- With its compact growth habit and stunning foliage, *Hoya rubida* is a rewarding plant for both novice and experienced Hoya enthusiasts. Its ease of care and captivating beauty make it a delightful addition to any indoor garden.
- To encourage bushier growth, pinch back the tips of the vines. This will promote branching and create a fuller, more compact plant.
- Be patient when it comes to flowering. While *Hoya rubida* is capable of blooming readily, it may take some time for a young plant to mature and produce its first flowers. Providing optimal growing conditions and a little bit of patience will be rewarded with a stunning floral display.
- Remember that every plant is unique and may have slightly different care requirements. Observe your *Hoya rubida* closely and adjust your care routine as needed to ensure its continued health and happiness.
