Hoya ruthie is a delightful Hoya species cherished for its compact growth habit and charming heart-shaped leaves. This delightful Hoya is native to the Philippines and is a perfect choice for those seeking a manageable and visually appealing houseplant.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, heart-shaped leaves, typically 2.5-4 cm (1-1.5 inches) long, with a deep green colour and a slightly succulent texture. The leaves are closely spaced along the slender vines, creating a lush, compact appearance.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, fuzzy, white flowers with a subtle, sweet fragrance. The flowers often have a pinkish hue and are produced in rounded umbels.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a compact, vining growth habit. It can be grown in a hanging basket or trained to climb a small trellis or support.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some direct morning or evening sun can enhance the colour and growth of the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top 2.5 cm (1 inch) of soil to dry out between waterings. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons. Dilute the fertiliser to half strength.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix suitable for epiphytic plants.
