Hoya sigillatis 'Alas River' is a striking clone from Borneo, particularly noted for its long, narrow leaves covered in silver mottling and vibrant veining. It belongs to a group of epiphytic Hoyas renowned for decorative foliage and vigorous trailing or climbing tendencies.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Lance-shaped leaves with a pewter-grey wash, overlaid by dark green venation and maroon flushes in bright light.
- Flowers: Produces small, orange to burnt-apricot umbels with a soft, waxy sheen and a mild sweet fragrance.
- Growth Form: A scrambling epiphyte that twines or trails readily, ideal for hanging pots or moss poles.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; tolerates some direct morning sun but avoid intense midday rays.
- Water: Water when the potting medium is mostly dry; reduce frequency in cooler months.
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity; responds well to occasional misting in dry indoor environments.
- Media: Use an airy, fast-draining mix – orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat-based substrates work well.
- Temperature: Optimal between 18–28°C; protect from frost and cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser; reduce during winter dormancy.
- Repotting: Best done every 2–3 years or when root-bound; prefers slightly snug conditions.
Additional Notes
- Leaf markings intensify with stronger light exposure but may fade in low light conditions.
- Encouraging flowering may require a slight dry rest and consistent warm temperatures.
