Hoya sigillatis - The Splash-Leaf Hoya
The Splash-Leaf Hoya: A Unique Foliage Delight
Hoya sigillatis is a truly captivating Hoya species that stands out for its unique, 'splashed' foliage and charming, fragrant flowers. This delightful Hoya is native to Borneo and is a rewarding addition to any plant collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Elongated, slightly succulent leaves adorned with a captivating splashed pattern. The leaves are typically 8-12cm long (approximately 3-5 inches) and display a mesmerizing blend of greens and purples.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, star-shaped, fragrant flowers that are typically white or pale pink with a touch of red at the centre. These delicate blooms, about 8mm in diameter (approximately 0.3 inches), exude a sweet fragrance that adds to their charm.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a vining growth habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets or training on a trellis or support. It is an epiphyte in its natural habitat, meaning it grows on trees, but it adapts readily to pot culture.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best to maintain the vibrant colours of the leaves. While it can tolerate some shade, brighter light encourages more prolific flowering.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains away to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical Hoya to cold draughts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This Hoya can be grown in a hanging basket or pot. Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter.
Additional Notes
- Hoya sigillatis is a relatively easy Hoya to care for, making it a rewarding plant for both novice and experienced growers.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. A well-ventilated environment is crucial for healthy Hoya growth.
- This Hoya can be propagated through stem cuttings, allowing you to easily share its beauty with others.
