Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae ‘Variegata’ – H271
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae ‘Variegata’ – H271 is a compact, small-leaved Hoya with distinctive centre variegation. Its softly textured leaves combine dark green margins with irregular lime-green, yellow and cream colouring, while new growth may emerge pink or peach before hardening.
This is a slower-growing variegated form with a naturally trailing to lightly climbing habit. It is well suited to hanging baskets, shelves or a small trellis.
Key Characteristics
- Growth habit: Compact trailing or lightly climbing plant
- Foliage: Small, thick leaves with a softly pubescent or velvety surface
- Variegation: Yellow, lime-green and cream colouring through the centre of each leaf
- New growth: Developing leaves and stems may show pink or peach colouring
- Flowers: Small dark pink to reddish flowers with contrasting yellow centres
- Flowering habit: Established plants can flower repeatedly from retained peduncles
Care
- Light: Grow in bright, filtered light. Gentle morning sun can improve the foliage colour, but harsh afternoon sun may scorch the variegated sections.
- Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to partially dry before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots continually wet.
- Temperature: Best grown under intermediate to warm conditions, generally between 18–30°C. Protect from prolonged temperatures below approximately 12°C.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, provided there is good air movement.
- Media: Use an open, free-draining Hoya mix that allows plenty of air around the roots.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser at reduced strength during active growth.
- Support: Allow the stems to trail or train them loosely onto a small support.
Maintaining the Variegation
The amount of yellow and cream colouring will vary between individual leaves. New growth may take time to harden and develop its final colouring.
Watch for vines that repeatedly produce completely green leaves. Persistent reverted growth may be removed back to the last clearly variegated node to prevent it from overtaking the slower variegated sections.
Flowering
Provide bright filtered light, steady warmth and consistent care to encourage flowering. Do not remove old flower spurs or peduncles, as the plant can bloom repeatedly from the same points.
Please note: Variegation, new-growth colour and leaf shape vary naturally. Plants may display more or less yellow, cream or pink colouring than the photographed example.
