Hoya sp. Hat Som Paen is a naturally occurring, undescribed species from southern Thailand, collected near Hat Som Paen in the Ranong Province. It is admired for its elegantly narrow, rugose foliage and affinity for humid tropical forest conditions.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Long, narrow leaves with deeply etched veining and a coarse, wrinkled surface, adding considerable texture to any collection.
- Flowers: Produces attractive umbels of pale pink to whitish blooms, lightly fragrant and borne in modest clusters.
- Growth Habit: A climbing or trailing epiphyte with relatively fast growth under optimal conditions; ideal for hanging baskets or mounted culture.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; protect from harsh direct sun, especially during summer.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the mix is nearly dry; reduce watering slightly in cooler months.
- Humidity: Performs best in moderate to high humidity; consider misting or using a humidifier if grown indoors.
- Media: Use a fast-draining epiphytic mix rich in bark and perlite to support aerial roots.
- Temperature: Optimal growth between 18–28 °C; avoid exposure to temperatures below 10 °C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during active growth; reduce or pause in winter.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound, ideally in early spring before new growth accelerates.
