Hoya tengchongensis is a rare species of Hoya native to Tengchong County in Yunnan, China. This epiphytic plant thrives in warm, humid forests, often growing on trees or rocks. It features thick, succulent-like leaves and produces delicate, star-shaped flowers with a creamy-white to pale pink corolla and a striking red or purple corona.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, ovate to lanceolate, and dark green, with a smooth, velvety texture. The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stem and can grow up to 3cm (1.2in) long and 1.5cm (0.6in) wide.
- Flowers: Borne in clusters of up to 10, each with a diameter of 0.7cm (0.3in). The flowers are a delicate pale pink colour with a darker pink centre and have a subtle, sweet fragrance.
- Growth Habit: A compact vining plant that typically grows up to 1m (3.3ft) long. It is best grown in a hanging basket or on a small trellis to allow its unique foliage to take centre stage.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Misting the leaves regularly can help to increase humidity levels.
- Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 18-25°C (64-77°F). Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Fertilise once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
- Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer and root them in a well-draining potting mix.
