Hoya thailandica – H253

Hoya thailandica – H253 is a rarely offered species from the mountain forests of northern Thailand. It produces glossy green leaves on long climbing stems and clusters of white flowers with contrasting purple-red centres.

Unlike many tropical Hoyas, this species originates from approximately 2,000 metres elevation. It is best suited to cool-to-intermediate conditions and is a particularly useful choice for growers who struggle to maintain consistently warm nights.

Care

• Light: Grow in bright, filtered light with protection from harsh afternoon sun.
• Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry slightly before watering again. Do not leave the roots continually wet or allow the plant to remain completely dry for extended periods.
• Temperature: Best grown under cool-to-intermediate conditions. Aim for approximately 18–26°C during the day, with cooler nights around 10–18°C. Protect from frost.
• Summer conditions: Avoid prolonged hot nights and stagnant conditions. Provide additional shade, humidity and air movement during very hot weather.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial when combined with consistent air movement.
• Media: Use an open, free-draining Hoya mix that retains a small amount of moisture without becoming waterlogged.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser at reduced strength during active growth.
• Support: Provide a trellis or other support for the developing vines.

Flowering

Established plants flower best when given bright filtered light and a noticeable difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Do not remove old flower spurs or peduncles, as they may produce flowers repeatedly.

Please note: Young plants may initially produce narrower leaves than mature specimens. Leaf size and shape will vary with maturity and growing conditions.
