release_alert Low Stock - 2 available
Hoya thomsonii is a slow-growing species native to the lower montane and submontane forests of Bhutan, Nepal, northeast India, and parts of southern China. Typically found growing in mossy, humid environments at elevations ranging from 1000 to 2500 metres, it is recognised for its softly hairy foliage and dense, woolly inflorescences. The species was first formally described by Joseph Dalton Hooker in the 19th century and remains under the currently accepted name Hoya thomsonii Hook.f.
Distinctive features:
- Leaves are thick, elliptic to ovate, and distinctly pubescent on both surfaces
- New growth and stems are also covered in fine hairs
- Inflorescences are composed of many small, white to pale yellow flowers with a prominent fuzzy texture
- Corolla often reflexed, giving the blooms a rounded, cushion-like appearance
- Nectar production is moderate, and the flowers are mildly scented
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; avoid harsh direct sun
- Water: Allow surface of medium to dry slightly between waterings
- Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity, especially in drier climates
- Media: Well-draining mix with good aeration; orchid bark and perlite combinations are suitable
- Temperature: Performs best between 15°C and 28°C; protect from frost
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser during active growth
- Repotting: Infrequent; only when rootbound or medium becomes compacted
