Hoya tsangii 'Variegata' is a charming variegated form of the compact trailing species native to the Philippines. It is cherished for its creamy leaf margins and tidy growth habit, making it ideal for limited spaces or hanging displays.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Thick, slightly curved leaves with creamy-white to yellow margins surrounding olive-green centres.
- Flowers: Produces small, dark red to maroon star-shaped blooms with a sweet fragrance, typically in summer.
- Growth Habit: A trailing epiphytic species with a naturally compact and branching form, excellent for baskets or shelves.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid prolonged full sun which may scorch the variegated leaves.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out partially between waterings; reduce watering in cooler months.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity enhances growth and flowering; tolerate lower levels with acclimation.
- Media: Use a well-draining mix such as orchid bark with perlite or a chunky hoya blend.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 16–28°C; protect from temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertiliser or a specific hoya formula.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound, preferably in spring.
Additional Notes
- This variegated form may grow slightly slower than the green type due to reduced chlorophyll in its leaves.
- Encourage flowering by allowing some root restriction and providing strong but filtered light.
