Hoya wayetii is a tropical epiphyte native to the Philippines, admired for its elongated, slightly succulent leaves that feature a dark burgundy edge—particularly intense under high light. Its pendulous habit makes it a superb choice for hanging baskets or cascading shelf displays.
Distinctive Features
- Foliage: Narrow, lance-shaped leaves with a subtle central groove and contrasting reddish-purple margins that intensify in brighter light.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, waxy flowers that are reddish with a darker centre and emit a sweet fragrance when mature.
- Growth Form: Trailing to semi-arching stems ideal for baskets; moderate growth speed in warm conditions.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, filtered light is ideal; tolerates some direct morning sun but avoid harsh midday exposure.
- Water: Water when the top layer of soil feels dry; reduce in winter. Avoid letting roots sit in water.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity preferred—mist occasionally or use a humidity tray if indoors.
- Media: Use a coarse, well-draining epiphytic mix—orchid bark blended with perlite and coco coir works well.
- Temperature: Prefers 18–28 °C; protect from frost and cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season; reduce in cooler months.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound; repot just as growth resumes in spring.
Additional Notes
- Encourages blooming when rootbound and grown in bright conditions. Flowers typically appear in warmer months.
- Old peduncles should not be removed—they may rebloom in successive seasons.
