Hoya wayetii 'Variegata' - Exquisite Variegated Hoya
Hoya wayetii 'Variegata' is a striking cultivar of Hoya wayetii, known for its beautifully variegated foliage. Native to the Philippines, this epiphytic species thrives in warm, humid environments. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves display a mix of green, cream, and pink hues, with the colours intensifying under bright light. When mature, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of deep maroon to reddish-purple, exuding a sweet fragrance.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Elongated, lance-shaped, and highly variegated, with a vibrant mix of cream, green, and pink hues. The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stem and can grow up to 8cm (3.1in) long and 3cm (1.2in) wide.
- Flowers: Borne in clusters of up to 20, each with a diameter of 1.5cm (0.6in). The flowers are a deep red colour with a darker red corona and have a sweet, honey-like fragrance.
- Growth Habit: A compact vining plant that typically grows up to 2m (6.5ft) long. It is best grown in a hanging basket or on a small trellis to allow its variegated foliage to take centre stage.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Misting the leaves regularly can help to increase humidity levels.
- Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 18-25°C (64-77°F). Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Fertilise once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
- Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in spring or summer and root them in a well-draining potting mix.
