Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Teddy bear'
check_circle In Stock
Kalanchoe tomentosa ‘Teddy Bear’ is a cultivated form of the Madagascan species, adapted to dry, rocky habitats in its native range. This selection is distinguished by its compact growth and rich colouring, while still retaining the characteristic velvety leaves of the species.
The plant forms upright stems clothed in fleshy, grey-green leaves that are densely covered in fine hairs, giving them a soft texture. In the ‘Teddy Bear’ form, the leaf margins and tips are accentuated with warm copper-brown edging, which becomes more intense when grown in bright light. Mature plants can reach 20–30 cm in height and slowly branch to form small shrubs.
Like the typical species, flowering is infrequent in cultivation, but when it occurs, clusters of tubular blooms appear at stem tips. The flowers are greenish-yellow with brownish tones, attracting insect pollinators in their native environment. Growth resumes after flowering, with clumps gradually expanding over time.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun daily to maintain compact form and enhance leaf colour.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely before rewatering. Overwatering can lead to root or stem rot.
- Media: Use a sharply draining succulent mix with added grit, perlite, or sand.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted succulent fertiliser monthly in spring and summer. Withhold fertiliser in winter.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–27 °C. Protect from frost and avoid exposure to prolonged cold below 10 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes top-heavy, trimming old woody stems if necessary.
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
