Laelia lundii - The Miniature Rock Orchid
cancel Sold out
Laelia lundii is a small orchid species native to Brazil and Bolivia, where it grows on trees and occasionally on rocky surfaces in seasonally dry forests.
The plant develops small ovoid pseudobulbs, each carrying a single narrow, leathery leaf. Growth is compact, with pseudobulbs forming close together along a creeping rhizome. This miniature habit makes the species well suited to mounted culture, allowing its roots to dry rapidly between watering.
Flowering occurs from late winter to spring, with each pseudobulb producing a short inflorescence that bears one or two delicate blooms. The flowers are typically white to pale lavender, sometimes with a yellow or orange throat, and may measure 3–4 cm across.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, round pseudobulbs that are typically 1-2cm in diameter (approximately 0.5-1 inch). The pseudobulbs are typically a light green colour and store water and nutrients for the plant.
- Leaves: Short, narrow leaves that are typically 5-10cm long (approximately 2-4 inches). The leaves are a vibrant green colour and have a slightly leathery texture.
- Flowers: Produces a single, relatively large flower that can be up to 5cm (approximately 2 inches) in diameter. The flowers are typically a vibrant pink or purple colour and have a delicate fragrance. They can last for several weeks, providing a long-lasting display of colour.
- Growth Habit: This Laelia is a compact, clumping epiphyte. It typically reaches a height of 10-15cm (4-6 inches) and forms a dense clump of pseudobulbs and leaves.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This Laelia appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical orchid to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot or mounted on a piece of bark or cork. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix
