Lepismium cruciforme var. anceps - Mistletoe Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Lepismium cruciforme var. anceps is a recognised variety of this South American forest cactus, distributed through Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. It grows in subtropical forests, where it clings to tree branches or occasionally establishes on rocky surfaces. In these shaded habitats, it benefits from filtered light, regular moisture, and consistently high humidity.
This variety is noted for its more elongated, distinctly flattened stems compared with the typical form. The segments are usually narrow and two-angled, sometimes with a slightly winged outline, giving a sharper, less irregular profile. Stems are bright green and can flush reddish tones when exposed to higher light, with small areoles carrying only a few fine bristles.
Flowers are produced along the stem margins in spring and summer. They are small, funnel-shaped, and white to pale pink, followed by rounded berries that ripen to red or purple. These fruits are attractive to birds, which play a role in spreading the seeds through the forest canopy. Clumps of this variety often develop into trailing cascades, making it well suited to hanging cultivation.
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or semi-shade; avoid strong direct sun which can scorch the narrow stems.
- Water: Keep evenly moist in the growing season, allowing the surface to dry lightly between applications. Reduce watering during cooler months.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, similar to its natural forest environment.
- Media: Use an airy, organic-rich mix with added perlite or bark to retain moisture while draining freely.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted cactus or orchid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during active growth.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 15–28 °C. Protect from cold and avoid prolonged exposure below 5 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, refreshing the mix and thinning or trimming stems if the plant becomes congested.
