Liparis reflexa (Tom Cat Orchid) - Unique Orchid with a Curious Scent
Endemic to New South Wales, Australia, Liparis reflexa, commonly known as the Tom Cat Orchid, is a fascinating orchid with a unique and somewhat surprising fragrance. Its lithophytic growth habit and intriguing floral display make it a captivating addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Growth Habit: This lithophytic orchid, meaning it grows on rocks, typically inhabits moist forests and gorges. It features pseudobulbs with up to four leaves and a flowering stem that can bear up to thirty or more flowers.
- Flowers: The yellowish-green flowers of Liparis reflexa are small but numerous, creating a charming display. However, the most distinctive feature of this orchid is its unique fragrance, often described as smelling like urine or a wet dog. This unusual scent is thought to attract pollinators.
Care Tips
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, keeping the potting media moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter months.
- Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity levels, around 50-70%. You can achieve this by misting the plant regularly or using a humidity tray.
- Temperature: This orchid prefers intermediate temperatures, ideally between 18-28°C (64-82°F) during the day and 10-15°C (50-59°F) at night.
- Potting Media: Use a well-draining orchid potting mix, such as bark or a mixture of bark and sphagnum moss. You can also grow it mounted on cork bark or tree fern fibre.
- Fertiliser: Fertilise weakly, every other week during the growing season (spring-summer) with a balanced orchid fertiliser.
- Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Additional Notes
- Liparis reflexa is a relatively easy orchid to care for, making it suitable for beginners.
- Its unique fragrance and lithophytic growth habit make it a fascinating conversation starter.
- This orchid can be grown in pots, baskets, or mounted.
- With proper care, Liparis reflexa can bloom reliably for many years.
