Ludisia discolor – Jewel Orchid – Large Ex-Propagation Clumps
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
These substantial Ludisia discolor clumps have been part of our propagation stock and are now ready for a new pot and a new home. They contain a dense framework of established stems with multiple leafy shoots—far more developed than the small starter plants usually offered.
Clumps like these are rarely available for sale. They offer the opportunity to grow on a substantial jewel orchid display or divide an established plant into smaller clumps.
What You Will Receive
You will receive the exact plant photographed for your selected listing or option. Each clump is individually photographed and available as a one-off.
- Plant supplied: One large, established ex-propagation clump, exactly as pictured
- Growth: Multiple shoots arising from a substantial mass of older stems
- Foliage: Dark, velvety leaves with fine pink to copper-coloured veins
- Condition: Mature stock plant with visible old pruning cuts and cosmetic marks
- Repotting: Ready for fresh growing mix and a roomier pot
- Availability: One of each photographed plant only
Please review the photograph of your selected plant, including its shape, foliage, old cut stems and cosmetic marks. These are established propagation plants with their own individual character.
About These Stock Plants
These plants have been used to produce cuttings, so they have visible cut stem ends, older leafless sections and an irregular, branching structure. This is their propagation history—not a recently trimmed plant being presented as a perfect foliage specimen.
Expect some older leaf marks, scarring and cosmetic imperfections. Their appeal is the substantial established clump and the many shoots already present. With fresh mix and room to spread, they can be grown on into a fuller display.
Ready for Repotting
These clumps are ready to move beyond their current nursery pots. Choose a slightly wider pot with drainage holes to accommodate the spreading stems, rather than a much deeper or oversized container.
Use a fine, moisture-retentive but airy jewel orchid mix. Ludisia is a terrestrial orchid, so coarse orchid bark alone is not suitable. Keep leafy shoots above the mix rather than burying the entire clump.
You can retain the clump as one plant or divide it carefully, keeping roots and healthy shoots together wherever possible.
Care
- Light: Filtered light or bright shade. Protect the foliage from strong direct sunlight.
- Water: Keep the mix lightly moist, not waterlogged. Avoid allowing the entire root ball to become completely dry.
- Temperature: Warm indoor conditions are suitable. Protect from frost and cold draughts.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity with gentle airflow.
- Growing mix: A fine, airy terrestrial orchid mix that retains some moisture while draining freely.
- Feeding: Apply diluted fertiliser during active growth.
Flowers
Ludisia discolor is primarily grown for its patterned foliage, but also produces upright spikes of small white flowers with yellow centres. These clumps are sold as foliage plants; flowering at the time of supply is not guaranteed.
Transport
Ludisia has fleshy stems that can snap during handling and transport. We pack carefully, but some stem breakage or leaf damage may occur, particularly with these crowded, branching clumps.
Healthy broken stem sections can often be used as cuttings. Place them in a suitable lightly moist propagation mix, with a node in contact with the mix and the leaves above it. Rooting is not guaranteed.
