Mammillaria plumosa - Feather Cactus
Mammillaria plumosa, commonly known as Feather Cactus, is a fascinating small cactus originating from northeastern Mexico. Its distinguishing feature is its soft, feathery spines, which give it a fluffy and delicate appearance.
Distinctive Features
- Spines: Feathery, white, and soft spines densely covering the plant, creating a soft cotton-like appearance.
- Flowers: Small, white to pale pink blooms emerging at the apex, typically appearing in late winter or early spring.
- Growth Habit: Compact and globular, gradually forming dense clusters or mats.
Care Notes
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight; protect from intense afternoon sun.
- Water: Minimal watering, allowing the soil to thoroughly dry out between sessions; reduce water significantly in winter.
- Humidity: Thrives in low to average humidity environments, suitable for typical indoor settings.
- Temperature: Best kept between 15°C and 25°C; sensitive to temperatures below 5°C.
- Fertiliser: Fertilise sparingly with diluted cactus fertiliser once a month during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every two years in early spring, using a well-draining cactus mix.
Additional Notes
- Highly decorative and well-suited for containers, windowsills, and indoor displays.
- Easy to grow, making it suitable for beginners and experienced cactus enthusiasts.
- Gentle handling recommended to avoid damaging the delicate spines.
- Non-toxic to pets, although handling caution due to spines is advised.
Mammillaria plumosa, with its enchanting soft texture and easy-going nature, offers a delightful addition to any succulent or cactus collection.
