Mammillaria geminispina (Syn. elegans) – Twin-Spined Cactus with Offsets
Mammillaria geminispina (Syn. elegans) – Clumping Twin-Spined Collector's Gem
Mammillaria geminispina, natively found in the semi-arid regions of central Mexico, is a charming cactus species prized for its dense clumps and paired spines. This particular specimen is a standout from our stud bench—a generously sized plant with eight substantial offsets, making it an exceptional addition to any collector's array.
Distinctive Features
- Twin spines: Each tubercle bears a distinctive pair of central spines, giving the plant a textured, symmetrical appearance.
- Woolly areoles: Densely woolly areoles lend the plant a soft, silvered aspect, especially at the crown where flowers emerge.
- Clumping habit: Mature specimens, such as this one, naturally produce multiple basal offsets, forming attractive rounded clusters.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to full sun. Morning sun is ideal if grown indoors.
- Water: Water sparingly during the growing season; allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Very limited water in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers dry air; avoid overly humid environments to reduce risk of rot.
- Media: Use a gritty, free-draining cactus mix with added pumice or perlite.
- Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C during active growth. Tolerates cooler temperatures down to 5°C when kept dry in winter.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in early spring or when clumps outgrow the pot.
Additional Notes
- Produces dainty pale pink to magenta flowers in a crown-like ring during spring and early summer.
- Highly collectable and sought-after, especially when grown into large clumps like this one.
- Non-toxic to pets, though the spines may cause mechanical irritation.
Ideal for collectors and enthusiasts alike, Mammillaria geminispina (Syn. elegans) offers not just architectural beauty through its neat clumping form and silvery spination, but also resilience and ease of care. This large, multi-offset specimen is a rare gem that will thrive in a sunny window or greenhouse setting.
