Mammillaria matudae – Crimson-Crowned Clustering Cactus
Mammillaria matudae is a captivating cactus native to the arid regions of central Mexico, thriving particularly in rocky slopes and semi-desert environments. Celebrated for its densely clustering stems and showy magenta blooms, this species stands out for both its ornamental appeal and ease of cultivation.
Distinctive Features
- Flowering display: Produces striking magenta to deep pink funnel-shaped flowers arranged in a neat ring near the crown during spring and early summer.
- Clumping growth habit: Forms dense, cushion-like mounds composed of cylindrical stems covered in white radial spines, giving it a woolly appearance.
- Areoles and tubercles: Tubercles are firm and conical, bearing both white radial and darker central spines, with some forms showing reddish tinges on spine tips.
Care Tips
- Light: Requires full sun to thrive, but tolerates partial shade in very hot climates.
- Water: Water sparingly during active growth; allow the soil to fully dry between watering. Keep dry in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers dry air; high humidity may promote rot if drainage is poor.
- Media: Well-draining cactus mix with added grit or perlite is essential.
- Temperature: Optimal range is 18–30°C; tolerates down to around 2°C if kept completely dry.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted cactus fertiliser monthly during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when clumps become crowded; best done in early spring.
Additional Notes
- Highly attractive to pollinators like bees when in bloom.
- Non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with animals.
- May benefit from occasional pruning of older stems to encourage healthier clumping.
- Suited for rock gardens, containers, and indoor collections under bright light.
With its vibrant crown of blossoms and tidy clustering growth, Mammillaria matudae makes a charming addition to any cactus collection. Its relatively undemanding care needs and visual charm ensure it’s treasured by beginners and enthusiasts alike.
