Mammillaria pringlei is a small globular cactus native to the arid regions of northern Mexico, particularly the Sonoran Desert. This species is admired for its snow-white radial spines that densely cover the tubercles, giving the plant a frosted, haloed appearance. It often grows solitary but may slowly form clumps with age. Named in honour of Cyrus Pringle, an American botanist, it is a compact and charming specimen well-suited for collectors of miniature and slow-growing cacti.

Distinctive Features

• Spination: Dense white radial spines with a small number of brownish central spines; spines form a woolly, almost feathery texture over the stem.
• Stem Form: Rounded to slightly cylindrical green stems, typically 4–8 cm in diameter and up to 15 cm tall in mature specimens.
• Flowers: Produces dainty, pale pink to whitish flowers arranged in a neat ring near the crown during spring and early summer.

Care Tips

• Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight; best placed in a south-facing location or under strong artificial light.
• Water: Allow soil to dry completely between waterings; reduce to once a month or less during winter dormancy.
• Humidity: Prefers dry air; excessive humidity can lead to rot.
• Media: Requires a sharply draining cactus mix; add extra pumice or perlite for improved aeration.
• Temperature: Ideal range is 18–28°C; can tolerate down to 5°C if kept completely dry.
• Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser diluted to half strength.
• Repotting: Infrequent repotting needed; only when roots outgrow the container, usually every 3–4 years.
