Mammillaria pringlei – (WA Prohibited)
release_alert Low Stock - 1 available
Mammillaria pringlei is a clustering cactus native to the central Mexican states of Hidalgo, Querétaro, and Guanajuato. It inhabits semi-arid slopes and rocky hillsides, often establishing among limestone or volcanic substrates at moderate elevations. The species forms small, dense mounds that integrate into the dry scrub environment.
The stems are globose to short cylindrical, usually 3–6 cm across, and are covered with pronounced tubercles. Each areole bears clusters of slender radial spines that are white to pale yellow, and often a few darker central spines. With age, offsets develop at the base, producing low clumps over time.
Flowers emerge in a ring near the crown during spring, ranging from pink to reddish purple, measuring about 1.5–2 cm in length. These are followed by slender red fruits that carry numerous black seeds, providing an important means of regeneration and dispersal in its natural habitat.
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct sun, though some protection is beneficial in the hottest part of summer.
- Water: Water moderately during the active growing season, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between applications. Keep almost dry during winter.
- Media: Prefers a mineral-based, free-draining cactus mix with a high proportion of grit or pumice.
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly with a diluted cactus fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer.
- Temperature: Best growth occurs between 18–30 °C. Can withstand down to about 5 °C if kept dry.
- Repotting: Repot every few years when clumps enlarge, ensuring minimal disturbance to the roots.
