Mammillaria schiedeana ‘Dalek’ is a cultivated form of a species native to the limestone slopes of central-eastern Mexico, where it grows at mid to high elevations in semi-arid scrub. The species is noted for its small clustering habit, forming low mats of rounded stems among rocky terrain.
This selection is particularly recognised for its compact growth and very dense, short white spines that cover the tubercles. The spines lie close to the stem surface, creating a bead-like texture that inspired the name ‘Dalek’. Individual stems usually remain under 6 cm across, and over time clusters expand into small cushions.
Flowering occurs around the stem apex, typically in spring, with pale cream to yellow blooms sometimes flushed with pink. The flowers are followed by narrow, elongated red fruits that hold numerous small black seeds, a characteristic feature of the species when pollinated.
Care Tips:
- Light: Needs bright light with some direct sun, but protection is helpful from the strongest summer rays.
- Water: Water modestly during warmer months, letting the soil dry fully between applications. Keep almost dry in winter.
- Media: Grow in a sharply draining mix with a high proportion of mineral grit or pumice.
- Fertiliser: Apply a dilute, low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
- Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–30 °C and tolerates down to about 5 °C if kept dry.
- Repotting: Repot infrequently, only when the clump fills its container, taking care when handling the spines.
