Mammillaria spinosissima 'Compacta' – Rare Clustered Specimens
Mammillaria spinosissima, also listed under the synonym Mammillaria pico, is a striking cactus native to central Mexico, where it thrives in arid, rocky slopes. The 'Compacta' form is highly sought after for its tightly packed, upright stems and especially dense spination. These exceptional, large specimen plants are rare, and only three are available.
Distinctive Features
- Spines: Impressive white to reddish radial spines form a soft-looking but dense covering.
- Flowers: Vivid pink to magenta blooms form a crown around the stem in spring and summer.
- Growth Form: Naturally clustering, with mature plants forming tidy, compact clumps.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers full sun to very bright indirect light for compact growth and flowering.
- Water: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings during active growth.
- Humidity: Tolerates dry air; avoid excess humidity especially in cool weather.
- Media: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix with added perlite or pumice.
- Temperature: Ideal between 10–30°C; protect from frost below 5°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted cactus fertiliser.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when clump outgrows its container.
Additional Notes
- This cultivar is prized for its neat form and vibrant flowers—an excellent collector's item.
- Not known to be toxic to pets, but spines can injure if handled carelessly.
