Mammillaria spinosissima Pico Compacta

Mammillaria spinosissima ‘Pico’ – Compact Form is a selected cultivar of the Mexican species Mammillaria spinosissima, chosen for its dense, symmetrical tubercle arrangement and prolific flowering habit. The species is native to central Mexico, where it grows on rocky slopes and cliffs in arid to semi-arid regions. This compact selection maintains a smaller overall size while retaining the species’ ability to produce numerous blooms in a ring near the crown.
The stem remains globular to short cylindrical for many years, with closely set tubercles and fine radial spines giving a neat, patterned appearance. In the flowering season, the plant can produce a continuous succession of bright pink to magenta flowers, often forming several rings over time. Fruits are elongated and red, containing small black seeds, and may develop sporadically after flowering.
This form thrives when grown in strong light with excellent drainage and low humidity. It benefits from regular watering during active spring and summer growth, followed by a drier, cooler winter rest to encourage the next season’s flowers. Its compact growth makes it ideal for small pots or inclusion in mixed cactus displays where space is limited.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun or bright light for compact growth and abundant flowering.
- Water: Water moderately in the growing season; keep almost dry in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity and good airflow.
- Media: Use a gritty, free-draining cactus mix.
- Fertiliser: Apply a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser during active growth.
- Temperature: Best between 18–30 °C; protect from frost.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring if necessary, handling carefully to avoid spine damage.
