The Rosy Pincushion Cactus: A Delightful Blooming Cactus
Mammillaria zeilmanniana is a truly captivating cactus species that will add a touch of charm and colour to your plant collection. This delightful cactus is native to Mexico and is prized for its densely-packed spines and beautiful rosy-pink flowers.
Distinctive Features
- Stems: Short, cylindrical stems that are typically 5-10cm tall (approximately 2-4 inches) and 5-7cm in diameter (approximately 2-2.8 inches). The stems are covered in numerous tubercles, each bearing a cluster of spines.
- Spines: Densely-packed, white or yellowish spines that give the cactus a pincushion-like appearance. The spines are relatively short and harmless, making it easy to handle and enjoy.
- Flowers: Produces a ring of vibrant, rosy-pink flowers around the crown of the stem in spring. The flowers are a beautiful contrast to the white spines and create a stunning display.
- Growth Habit: This Mammillaria has a clustering growth habit, readily forming offsets that create a beautiful, mounded display over time.
Care Tips
- Light: Full sun to partial shade. This cactus thrives in bright light but can tolerate some shade during the hottest part of the day. For optimal flowering and spine development, provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to be cautious. During the winter dormancy period, reduce watering significantly.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. You can also add perlite or pumice to improve drainage. A slightly acidic soil pH is preferred.
- Temperature: Tolerates a wide range of temperatures, from cool nights to hot days. However, it's best to protect it from frost. Ideal temperatures are between 18-24°C (64-75°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted cactus fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilising during the winter dormancy period.
- Propagation: This cactus can be easily propagated through offsets. Carefully remove offsets from the mother plant and allow them to callus over before potting them up in well-draining soil.
