Mammillaria zeilmanniana – Ruby Pincushion Cactus
check_circle In Stock
Mammillaria zeilmanniana is a small, clustering cactus species native to Guanajuato, Mexico. It grows on rocky slopes and cliffs in semi-arid regions, often in pockets of gritty soil where drainage is excellent. The species is known for its long flowering period and the ability to produce vibrant blooms multiple times in a year under favourable conditions.
The stems are spherical to short cylindrical, covered in tubercles arranged in spirals, each bearing a cluster of white radial spines and a few central spines. Flowers are typically bright magenta to purple-pink and can form a ring around the stem apex. Following pollination, elongated red fruits develop, containing small black seeds.
In cultivation, it is undemanding when provided with strong light, low humidity, and a free-draining mineral-based substrate. It is tolerant of occasional drought but benefits from regular watering during its active spring and summer growth. In winter, watering should be greatly reduced to keep the plant dry and cool, encouraging abundant flowering in the following season.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to bright light for compact growth and strong flowering.
- Water: Water moderately in the growing season; keep almost dry in winter.
- Humidity: Low humidity with good airflow.
- Media: Use a gritty, free-draining cactus mix.
- Fertiliser: Apply a dilute, low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser during active growth.
- Temperature: Prefers 18–30 °C; protect from frost.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring, handling carefully to avoid damaging spines.
