Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, this plant is known for its distinctive leaf movements, folding upwards in the evening and opening again by morning. The bold red venation against the dark green background makes it a notable selection within the Maranta genus.

Distinctive features:

  • Leaf structure: Oval leaves with a velvety texture, featuring prominent red veins radiating from a central midrib across a deep green surface, with lighter green or silvery patches between the veins.
  • Growth habit: Low-growing, spreading form, often reaching 30–40 cm in height and spreading wider through creeping rhizomes.
  • Flowering characteristics: Small, delicate white to pale purple flowers may appear sporadically, though flowering is less common indoors.
  • Leaf movement: Demonstrates nyctinasty, a daily leaf movement where the foliage lifts and folds at night, resembling hands in prayer.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch or fading of colours.
  • Water: Maintain consistently moist soil, but avoid waterlogging; allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
