check_circle In Stock
Masdevallia Cusco Gold 'Karen' is a cultivated clone of the hybrid Masdevallia Cusco Gold, itself a cross between species native to the Andean cloud forests of Peru and surrounding regions. These high-altitude environments are cool, moist, and shaded, with frequent mist and excellent air circulation, conditions that guide its cultural requirements in cultivation.
This clone produces the distinctive triangular flowers typical of the genus, with golden-yellow sepals that may be marked or suffused with orange tones depending on growing conditions. The flowers are carried singly on slender stems that rise above the foliage, and each bloom can last for several weeks in suitable conditions.
The foliage consists of narrow, upright leaves emerging from short stems, forming a compact clump. In cultivation, plants can flower at various times of the year, though they tend to bloom most reliably when night and day temperatures remain within their preferred cool range.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, filtered light; avoid harsh direct sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist throughout the year; never allow the roots to dry completely.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity, ideally 60–80%, with good air movement to prevent fungal issues.
- Media: Use a fine-grade orchid mix such as sphagnum moss or fine bark blended with perlite.
- Temperature: Thrives in cool conditions, around 10–22°C; avoid exposure to heat above 27°C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted orchid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
- Repotting: Repot annually or when the media breaks down, preferably in spring.
