Masdevallia picea – Rare Cool-Growing Species Orchid
check_circle In Stock
Masdevallia picea is an unusual cool-growing species orchid producing fleshy, triangular flowers in deep burgundy-red with a contrasting yellow throat. Each flower finishes in three elongated tails and is held low among the leaves.
This compact species develops a dense clump of upright, leathery leaves. Its distinctive flowers may produce an unpleasant carrion-like scent, particularly at close range. This scent is a natural part of the plant’s pollination strategy.
Plant Supplied
You will receive an established flowering-size plant of Masdevallia picea. The photographs show the size and presentation of the current plant.
The plant is photographed in flower for identification and reference. Flowers and buds may naturally finish before the plant is delivered.
Care
- Light: Bright, filtered light or well-shaded greenhouse conditions. Avoid hot direct sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged. Do not allow the plant to remain completely dry for extended periods.
- Temperature: Cool-growing. Protect from hot, stagnant conditions, particularly during summer.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity with constant gentle air movement.
- Media: Use a fine, moisture-retentive but freely draining orchid mix.
- Fertiliser: Apply a weak orchid fertiliser regularly during active growth. Flush the potting mix occasionally to prevent salt accumulation.
