Masdevallia pyxis

Masdevallia pyxis is a miniature orchid species native to the cloud forests of southern Ecuador and northern Peru, typically found growing at elevations between 1,800 and 2,600 metres. It produces small, solitary flowers with fused triangular sepals, most often in pale pink to white tones, often flushed with red or purple near the centre. The floral tube is short, and the tails are relatively stubby compared to other members of the genus. It thrives in cool, damp environments with constant moisture and high humidity.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers shaded to bright, indirect light. Direct sun should be avoided.
- Water: Requires consistent moisture. Use pure water and avoid allowing the roots to dry out.
- Humidity: High humidity above 75% is ideal for optimal growth.
- Media: Fine sphagnum moss or a mix of fine bark and perlite, ensuring excellent drainage and air flow.
- Temperature: Best suited to cool growing conditions, typically between 10–20 °C.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted orchid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Flush regularly to prevent salt accumulation.
- Repotting: Repot every 12–18 months, or when media begins to break down.
