Melocactus azureus
check_circle In Stock
A beautiful blue-bodied Melocactus species, highly sought after for its striking colour and the characteristic cephalium (red, bristly “cap”) it develops at maturity. Once the cephalium forms, the plant stops growing in size but continues to produce flowers and seed pods from the crown each year. This plant will be sent bare-rooted (without soil) for safe shipping.
Care
- Light: Bright light to full sun for best body colour.
- Water: Allow soil to dry almost completely between waterings; water sparingly in winter.
- Temperature: Warm-growing; protect from frost.
- Media: Well-draining cactus mix; avoid heavy soils.
- Fertiliser: Use a very dilute fertiliser during the growing season; excess fertiliser can distort growth.
- Repotting: Avoid disturbing roots; Melocactus dislike frequent repotting.

- Special Feature: Forms a red bristly cephalium at maturity
- Flowering: Small pink-purple flowers produced from the cephalium
- Growth Habit: Globular cactus, slow-growing
